Click to send this to a friend Click to print page

A 2 part adhesive with a white powder resin and the hardener is a colourless liquid. The adhesive is water resistant, however it is not recommended for joints that will be constantly wet, unless protected.

Features

  • High water resistance (suitable for outdoor furniture)
  • Heat resistant
  • High strength - forms a strong, durable bond
  • Cures at room temperature or faster with the application of heat
  • Sets by chemical reaction to a very rigid solid
  • Wet adhesive can be removed with water
  • Gap filling (up to 1.3mm)
  • Unaffected by moulds, fungi or bacteria
  • Resists creep under high stress loads

Where can this product be used?

  • Gluing joints in cabinet making
  • Outdoor furniture assembly
  • Bonding timber on your boat
  • Boat building (not for submerged joints)
  • Indoor/outdoor furniture
  • Cabinet making
  • Toys
  • Sorts gear; cricket bats, hockey sticks etc
  • Bonding laminated plastics to wood or hardboard where heat resistance is required
  • Also capable of withstanding sustained loads such as laminated glued beams
  • Recommended for 'edge to edge' bonded wood bench and table tops
  • All joints should fit well and at no place should the gaps exceed 1.3mm as specified for gap filling glues (B..S. 1204 Part 1). Close fitting joints will contribute to higher glued joint strengths.
  • Setting time is greatly extended in cold weather
  • Joints must be clamped while glue sets
  • Do not use if flexibility is required in the adhesive
  • Will not accept wood stains
  • Selleys 308 High Stress Wood Glue should not be used at temperatures below 10oC. For best results use above 15oC
  • Certain woods with a high tannin content (e.g. cedar and ash) may stain if iron is permitted to contaminate the hardener
  • The glue should not contact nails and screws in an adhesive joint as wood staining may result
  • When used where water contact is likely, it is highly recommended to coat timebr after use to prevent water absorbtion
  • Very suitable for softwoods, but may not bond dense resinous hardwoods. (Trial is recommended.)

What materials is this product suitable for?

  • Wood/timber
  • Plastics to wood
  • Plastics to hardboard

How to use this product

Preparation:

  • Remove traces of dust, moisture and grease from the surfaces to be bonded. Lightly sand (fine sandpaper) wood surfaces in the direction of the wood grain. Ensure all wood joints fit neatly and easily prior to mixing the glue.
  • Remove excess glue from surfaces with a moist cloth before the pot life is reached.
  • Brushes should be washed in cold water before the pot life is reached.
  • If the glue is approaching the end of its pot life and is difficult to remove with water, a 50/50 mixture of methylated spirits and water is recommended.

Mixing:

  • Do not use metal tins and spatulas for mixing (except stainless steel).  This adhesive will form a good bond, even when mixing ratios are varied from the optimal. Use the following guidelines:
  • For precise usage (non-specification work) mix 3 parts powder with 1 part water by weight. Then add the hardener equal to 10% of the liquid mixture by weight. (Use this mix for cabinet making and fine woodworking.)
  • For non-precise work mix 12 measures of powder, 2.5 measures of water and 1 measure of hardener by volume. (Use this mix if weighing of the ingredient is not possible.
  • For specification work, mix 5 parts powder with 2 parts water by weight. Then add the hardener equal to 10% of the liquid mixture by weight. (Use this mix to ensure the best possible strength, i.e. stressed beams.)
  • When mixing 308 powder with water it is advisable to add approximately half of the water to the powder to make a thick paste. Mix until lump free and add the remaining water. Mix thoroughly, then allow the mixture to stand until it is substantially free from air bubbles. Finally, add the hardener and mix thoroughly.
  • It is advisable to mix small quantities of Selleys 308 High Stress Wood Glue at a time. It is possible to premix the powder and water and leave it up to 2 days prior to addition of hardener.

Application:

  • Apply the mixed glue by brush to one surface and clamp the joint. Components must be assembled and firmly positioned before the glue gels, e.g. 1¾ hours at 20oC.

Clamping Times:

  • At 20oC, clamping time should be 4 hours. Clamping times should be doubled if the joint is liable to be strained soon after removal of pressure.

Alternative Method of Application:

  • The 308 resin powder and water mixture may be applied by brush to one surface of joint and the hardener applied to the other using a separate brush. The two surfaces should be brought together while the hardener is still damp and clamped.

Handy tips

  • The working life varies with temperature as follows:

Temperature:              15ºC   20ºC   25ºC   30ºC
Working Life (Hours):  3        1¾     1¼      ¾

  • Hot setting times range from 1/2 minute at 100oC to 4½ minutes at 60oC.
  • The powder/water/hardener mixture coverage varies from 200 to 400gm/square metre, i.e. 1 m2  coverage could require 150g to 290g of powder.
  • When painted directly on timber, hardener coverage varies from 100mL to 150 mL/m2.
  • For cleaning surface prior to application of adhesive, if the surface is porous, we would recommend using Selleys Liquid Sugar Soap. If the surface is non-porous eg glass or metal, firstly clean the surface with Mineral Turpentine and then again with Methylated Sprits. If there is old difficult to remove residue such as old paint, we recommend using paint stripper such as Selleys Kwik Strip Smart.
  • Once cured removal is very difficult. mechanical action (sanding) is recommended.

Safety tips

  • Do not allow glue to set on hands.  The hardener contains Formic Acid and should not be allowed to come into contact with the skin. Should this occur, wash the affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
  • In case of eye contact with hardener, hold eyes open, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.
  • Gloves are recommended during mixing and application.
  • If poisoning by ingestion of the hardener occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone - Australia: 131 126; New Zealand 0800 764 766.
  • Do not induce vomiting. Give a glass of water to drink, and seek medical advice.
  • For further information refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Storage and re-use

  • Close container firmly when not in use. Store in a cool place.
