Simply cut off enough for the job, mix thoroughly between your fingers until the putty is mixed to a uniform colour and force into the hole and feather the putty out to the edges to ensure the hole is sealed.
If you can give the inside of the hole a bit of a scratch up first this can assist the putty adhering to the sides of the hole.
